Regis Philbin is going to retire. He disclosed it recently on “Regis and Kelly.” He said he had an announcement to make, which shocked Kelly Ripa and the audience. Regis Philbin will cap off a long and illustrious career. He has made enough in his job to likely not have to ever take out short term loans in retirement living.
Retirement living for Philbin
Philbin was on “Live with Regis and Kelly” on Tues, January 18. This was when a big statement was made. Regis announced he can be retiring. Kelly was very surprised by this, claims ABC. The audience was surprised as well. There has been 28 years of “Regis and Kelly” running as a very popular morning talk show, although it was “Regis and Kathie Lee” with co-host Kathie lee Gifford before that. Regis said this would be his last year on the show with his last day in the fall sometime although he didn’t give an exact date. It should be quite the send off, as few have had the kind of longevity Philbin has had in TV.
Long job ultimately at an end
The job in TV is something Regis Philbin has had for quite a while. The show he was on, called the “Joey Bishop Show” was canceled 2 years after he started on it. He was the Ed MacMahon-like sidekick to Joey Bishop. Then he moved to a job as a host of “The Morning Show.” This was within the NY area and was a variety program. Lee Gifford was then added to the show. In 1988 on ABC, it became “Live with Regis and Kathie Lee” because ratings were so high. .
Philbin, who is 79, certainly deserves a break at this point for slogging it out so long. Now the show has to discover a replacement. It might be pretty difficult to do. It is going to hard to fill the position for anyone who gets it.
